How To Guide for Building Container Houses Will Inspire & Instruct, Says Guelph author

GUELPH— If you've ever thought about transforming a steel shipping container into a cozy, off-the-grid home, Christoph Kesting has published a book that could help you through the process.

And quite the process it is.

The 34-year-old former Guelph native, now living in Vancouver, has published a 112-page guide based on his experiences over the last three years converting a steel box into a home. He did so in the back lot of a business near downtown Guelph.

In an interview this week, Kesting said the book, "How to Build a Container House," is so much more than a how-to guide to turning a metal box into a livable space – it's a story about transformation, he said.

It delivers the "hard how-to," providing a step-by-step process of how to cut through metal or how to set up a composting toilet.

It also lays out the "soft how-to," taking a much more philosophical approach to the process of building a living space and working with others. One chapter is called How to Build Light and outlines three principles of Zen architecture. Another chapter is called How to Break the Box and encourages the builder to push through the difficulty of designing the structure and to rely on the team of friends they've assembled to help.

"You're building nothing if you aren't building good relationships," the chapter reads.

Both the soft and the hard how-to guides are necessary to build a true container home, he said.

The book is a culmination of two and a half years of Kesting's personal experience – some positive and some negative – slightly softened for print and served up with a side of playful enthusiasm. The quote on the second page accurately describes Kesting's message as "poetically delivered with new generation, hippy business savvy exuberance."

The story behind the book began in 2012 when Kesting sold his Guelph home and used the money to embark on a project that he was unsure he could complete. His goal was to transform a shipping container – normally used to haul cargo from one end of the world to the other – into a comfortable abode, allowing him to live sustainably and off the grid, without going into debt in the process.

Why build with shipping container? Kesting said turning them into a home is a good way to repurpose the material. They are relatively inexpensive and they are available throughout the world.

The 20-foot-long, eight-foot-wide, 8.5-feet-tall steel container was dropped off in the parking lot behind Diyode, the Guelph do-it-yourself business, and lovingly named the Foxden. Foxden was nearly complete and Kesting was hoping to sell it to someone locally and have it installed in a south-facing hill somewhere in Guelph. After running into difficulty selling it, Horrigan offered to buy it and move it to his property in Peterborough.

The container house was brought to the property last year and Horrigan and his wife were able to put the finishing touches on it. Reached by phone, he said the couple spent around $20,000 putting everything they wanted into it.

"Really, it's quite beautiful, and easy to heat," he said. The dwelling is equipped with a rocket mass heater, a space-heating system that uses an efficient wood-burning stove to heat a bench made of a mixture of clay and sand. He said one fire could heat the dwelling for 24-hours or longer, even in cold weather.

It also has a solar panel used to charge a battery that could power the lights or other small electronics.

On Saturday, Kesting and some of the volunteers from Guelph will be in Peterborough to celebrate the launch of the new book and to hangout in container house.

The total expense of the Foxden project is listed in the book as costing $73,575. Using the money he received from the sale of his house, he sought out used materials for the project. He said it was important for him to make the build economically and environmentally friendly.

A lot of money and time invested into the project was spent on research and development. If he were to take on the project again knowing what he knows now, he said he could put it together for less than half the cost.

Kesting said if he had to choose two words to describe the book, they would be "Imagination and aggression."

In terms of imagination, he said he wants people to read this book and see the possibility of transforming a piece of garbage into something beautiful.

"The book is to help people imagine what it could be like to build something that inspires them. It could be a container house, it could be something else."

Aggression can be transformed into fuel and used to fuel a creative project. Kesting said some people carry frustration and aggression due to the current options available in their lives. That passion can be funneled towards something creative and inspired.

Kesting is now living in Vancouver and visiting family near Guelph on occasion. Besides promoting his book and occasionally attending trade shows to discuss container homes, Kesting is working as a consultant and helping others design and construct their own Foxden projects. In the book, he writes he's currently speaking online with a family in Turkey and helping them build their own container house.

GUELPH— If you've ever thought about transforming a steel shipping container into a cozy, off-the-grid home, Christoph Kesting has published a book that could help you through the process.

And quite the process it is.

The 34-year-old former Guelph native, now living in Vancouver, has published a 112-page guide based on his experiences over the last three years converting a steel box into a home. He did so in the back lot of a business near downtown Guelph.

In an interview this week, Kesting said the book, "How to Build a Container House," is so much more than a how-to guide to turning a metal box into a livable space – it's a story about transformation, he said.

It delivers the "hard how-to," providing a step-by-step process of how to cut through metal or how to set up a composting toilet.

It also lays out the "soft how-to," taking a much more philosophical approach to the process of building a living space and working with others. One chapter is called How to Build Light and outlines three principles of Zen architecture. Another chapter is called How to Break the Box and encourages the builder to push through the difficulty of designing the structure and to rely on the team of friends they've assembled to help.

"You're building nothing if you aren't building good relationships," the chapter reads.

Both the soft and the hard how-to guides are necessary to build a true container home, he said.

The book is a culmination of two and a half years of Kesting's personal experience – some positive and some negative – slightly softened for print and served up with a side of playful enthusiasm. The quote on the second page accurately describes Kesting's message as "poetically delivered with new generation, hippy business savvy exuberance."

The story behind the book began in 2012 when Kesting sold his Guelph home and used the money to embark on a project that he was unsure he could complete. His goal was to transform a shipping container – normally used to haul cargo from one end of the world to the other – into a comfortable abode, allowing him to live sustainably and off the grid, without going into debt in the process.

Why build with shipping container? Kesting said turning them into a home is a good way to repurpose the material. They are relatively inexpensive and they are available throughout the world.

Builder's Tiny Houses Caught In a Very Mortgage Quagmire

Each week, we seek expert advice to aid a small or medium-sized business overcome an integral issue.

“It’s a do-it-yourself container home,” the 35-year-old Toronto native says. “It is included with all the materials, the solar panel if you need the off-grid version.”

Mr. Kesting estimates that it's going to take the purchaser and a number of friends fourteen days to cut the holes for doors and windows, cover the outdoors with the precut wood and add the next storey, which comprises bed and rooftop balcony.

The homes could be on or off the grid, which has a composting toilet and solar energy panels available for people that don’t need to pay water and hydro bills.

Though he doesn’t yet get employees, Mr. Kesting has partners, like designers, who've helped map out how a homes work, especially the option to add second or third shipping containers to make larger homes with two and three bedrooms.

Mr. Kesting travelled to Toronto a few weeks ago to pitch his idea for the CBC show Dragons’ Den with the idea of securing $150,000 to assist launch his business. He expects to market two or three Foxdens over the following year, and seven to 10 in Year 2, attracting $1-million altogether after 3 years of operation.

Build a Container Home: Dragons, container homes and a dogged determination - Catherine's Blog

Christoph Kesting has faced the dragons. He came away a bit scorched, but fired up about pursuing his dream of helping people in Ontario, particularly a younger generation, gain access to an affordable, sustainable home made from a steel box.
His episode on CBC’s Dragons’ Den, where he pitches his FoxBox container home idea in hope of attracting investment, airs in the next few weeks. Kesting is back living in the Guelph area after a brief sojourn in Vancouver, and has started his company Kesting Homes.
Kesting is well-known in Guelph and area for his dogged determination to build a container home business and culture.
More than just a business enterprise, Kesting said he is eager to foster a strong sense of community around the idea of building sustainable, affordable homes from shipping containers.
“It’s gone from being focused on the product to more about the process,” he said in an interview. “It’s the way in which we are helping people access the market, and the joy of building.”
A few years ago, Kesting embarked on a project that would take about three years to complete. He sold his home in Guelph, used the proceeds to purchase a shipping container, found a place near Guelph’s downtown to set it down, and began gradually turning it into a living space.
Steel is heavy, and building a home, any home, takes many hands. Kesting turned to friends to help with the heavy lifting and fine details. Over time, he said Monday, a small, close-knit community of workers grew up around the project.
The project’s purpose, he found, exceeded the building of a practical, affordable, environmentally-sensitive living space. It also had a strong philosophical and human element. It brought people together for a higher purpose.
After catching some flack from the city over building permit regulations, Kesting found a taker for the home in Peterborough, where it was moved. Kesting also moved — to Vancouver for about a year. But he is now back in the Guelph-area.
What emerged from first building experience was a how-to book entitled “How to Build a Container Home.” It has done well. A blog on the process also attracted a lot of followers. The Globe and Mail did a feature on him. And then he got on television.
Kesting recently landed himself a spot on CBC Television’s Dragons’ Den, a popular show where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas in hope of attracting investment from a group of intense investors.
He said he was both encouraged by the investors, and eaten alive by them. On the episode, Kesting pitches the idea of a do-it-yourself container home kit for under $50,000. The kit includes the shipping container and all that is needed to build “the most carbon neutral container home in the world.”
His DIY book and a solar panel to power the building tools are included. The home, he said, can be built over 10 weekends.
“Part of the way the show works is to get you off your rocker, to challenge you,” he said. “I made the wager that not only would it be good business to get the story out there, but it would also be good for myself personally to be able to face down the dragons.”
He said he is proud of the Dragons’ Den experience. His efforts on the show were acknowledged, at least by one dragon, as credible and visionary. Another, however, found the idea somewhat ludicrous, even shameful.
“There was a moment there where I had to ask myself if I was really ashamed of it,” Kesting said. “It was a solidifying moment where I said, 'no, no, no.'”
He said he is grateful for the experience, which was like a high-powered coaching session. An important lesson to come out of it was the realization that he needed to become more efficient in his business approach. He’s putting that lesson into action.
Kesting currently has two clients for this container idea. One involves building a home using three, 40-foot containers in Haliburton. The other is a five container student housing project in Kitchener.
“For me, it’s about craftsmanship – how to keep the quality high, build it with other people who put some love into it,” he said. “We can do it.”
As a result of recent publicity, many inquiries were received about the building approach. Kesting found that the highest percentage of potential customers (70 per cent) are in Ontario. So, he hustled back to the province.
“So, I wanted to come back to Ontario and bring the idea back here,” he said.
